Iron, the first solar electric catamaran boat made in Bangladesh

Let us know what is a catamaran. It is basically a Tamil word called Kattamuram, meaning two logs tied together to increase stability for a small fishing boat. The same is called vela in Bangladesh, where during monsoon, young people tie up banana trunks to make as fishing boats to go for fishing in the water bodies.

The world is moving towards sustainable development goals and taking necessary measures to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. The transportation sector is one of the major contributors to global carbon emissions. The shipping industry alone accounts for nearly 3% of global carbon emissions. Moreover, it also creates noise pollution and oil spillage, causing severe damage to the environment. To address these issues, the development of electric ships is gaining popularity. One of the latest examples of such initiatives is Iron, the first solar-powered electric catamaran boat made in Bangladesh.

Iron is a brainchild of Ecomarine Innovation Group, one of the leading conglomerates in Bangladesh, who aimed to promote sustainable transportation in the country. The catamaran is powered by a 7.5-kilowatt solar panel, which generates electricity to run the boat. The boat has a maximum speed of 8 knots and can run for up to 20 hours without any external fuel. It has a capacity of carrying 30 passengers and can be used for transportation, sightseeing, and leisure activities.

The launch of Iron is a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions. Electric ships are environmentally friendly and do not produce any air or noise pollution. They are powered by renewable sources of energy, such as solar, wind, and hydro power. This makes them a reliable and sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-powered ships.

Moreover, electric ships are also cost-effective in the long run. The initial investment may be higher, but they require less maintenance and have lower operational costs compared to traditional ships. This makes them an attractive option for business owners who want to reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time.

Electric ships are not only good for the environment and economy, but they also offer a comfortable and enjoyable experience for passengers. They produce no noise pollution, which means that passengers can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing ride. This also makes electric ships an ideal option for sightseeing and leisure activities, where passengers can enjoy the beauty of nature without any disturbance.

The development of electric ships is in line with the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations. It promotes sustainable transportation, reduces carbon emissions, and protects the environment from pollution. The launch of Iron in Bangladesh is a great initiative towards achieving these goals, and it is hoped that more countries will follow suit in the future.
